The terminology “Massage Therapy” or “Registered Massage Therapy” can only be provided by a Regulated Health Professional under the provisions of the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA). These services can only be provided by a “Registered Massage Therapist” or “Massage Therapist” and using either term is well accepted and acknowledged by the profession.
Anyone using the title Massage Therapist (MT) or Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) has completed the required training and competency standards of the provincial regulatory body, which is known as the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO). The CMTO keeps an active registry of all practicing RMTs in Ontario, which is accessible to the public.
All Massage Therapists or Registered Massage Therapists, in order to meet the minimum competency standards in Ontario, have completed their training at an educational institution recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Training. After graduating from a 2,200 hour program over the course of two years, each individual must participate in provincial board exams in order to become registered with the College of Massage Therapist of Ontario (CMTO).
Other terminology, such as “Masseuse” or “Massage” is not title protected and theoretically could be used by any business name or individual. Sometimes this terminology will be used by other professionals or service providers who perform massage treatments but are not registered, regulated, and have not completed the formal training to hold the aforementioned titles.
All of the individuals at Target Therapeutics who provide massage therapy services are also Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs), and only those holding this title can provide massage therapy receipts which are eligible for coverage under workplace benefit packages, if applicable.
